On our own
On Sunday, David's Grandma and Grandpa Folsom went home. Now that our safety net has been removed, we're a little aprehensive about taking care of this little guy all on our own. But we're looking forward to visits from his Grandma Soderlund, Grandpa Soderlund, and all his aunts and uncles in the coming weeks!
Speaking of uncles, here's David with his Uncle Matt on Thanksgiving:
And here he is with Matt, Michelle and her mom Lois:
Also, to update you all on his weight, when he saw his pediatrician last Monday, he weighed 9lbs (9 ounces more than when we left the hospital)! Based on that weight gain, we were able to stop supplementing with formula. Tomorrow he'll see his doctor again and we're hoping for more weight gain. He'll be a real chub-chub before we know it!

Losing Weight Here!
Our Friend Lydia Comes to the Rescue!
Well at least one of us is losing weight. Today our nurse informed us that David lost 1 pound, and that while weight loss is not abnormal for newborns, David lost one more ounce than he should have. So we are now introducing one ounce of formula at every feeding in order to bulk him back up again. I am trying to model this behavior for David by bulking up on fast food and heavy desserts. I do it for my son. Chrissy is doing better today, her staples were removed and she is a bit more mobile than yesterday. Right now we are looking at leaving for home sometime tomorrow.

That Dreaded Day for all boys!
Well today was the circumcision day. Poor David. After a morning filled with long feedings and short naps, David’s 12:30 appointment arrived. In my ignorant state of mind I requested that I be present at this procedure. Well right off the bat I regretted showing up. They had the poor guy strapped into a car seat like contraption while the nursery nurse was drowning his sorrows with a sugar water pacifier. As the doctor began to wield medieval like contraptions, I began to think, “What have I done?” Well in the end David and I survived. OK, enough adventures for one day.
(This picture was from the night before, but I find it most fitting for this segment.)
Surviving the 1st Night
David likes to eat. He spent a lot of time pleading his case for food last night. Nursery time tapped out at a total of 3 1/2 hours (one hour session and another for two and a half) During that time we enjoyed our sleep. We are both running on adrenalin but still so excited to have this little chunk of a guy in our lives.

Our big boy and the plan to get him out.
We had an ultrasound on Tuesday (11/11/08), at which our baby weighed in at over 10 pounds. That's huge for a baby at only 38 weeks! We know that these measurements can be off sometimes, but our doctor doesn't think it's off by more than 10% (ie, one pound in this case). As the ultrasound technician left the office, Chrissy's mom heard him say "There's one for the record books." Hmm.
Women give birth to big babies all the time. In fact, Chrissy weighed almost 10 pounds when she was born, but she was 2 weeks late, she was her mom's 3rd child (birthing big babies is supposed to be easier for "experienced" moms), and still her mom suffered complications. Since letting the baby come "naturally" poses some real dangers to him and to Chrissy, our doctor recommended a C-section. SO... we've scheduled Baby Soderlund's C-section for Tuesday 11/18/08 at 12:30pm.
We're sort of puzzled by our baby's huge size. But we are also confident in his maker: "You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made... My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place." (Psalm 139:13-15) He has a plan in all this.
Boy, are we going to feel silly if he weighs anywhere less than 9 pounds on his birthdate!
